As You Allow

Volume One, Chapter 13: Garage Life (1986)

The Whisky A Go Go was nearly empty mid-week. Janine and her few friends sat faithfully. It was comically embarrassing hearing them clap. The fact that we had to come up with a sum of money for presale tickets was good for the club. We got burned and figured other bands did as well. It was the wrong club to launch a new band. We had no following or money to back our straight-ahead rock-and-roll band. At that time, punk rock was the in sound. After the Whiskey showcase bombed with nobody and no fizzle, the band paused and learned. We lost a little pride at that chance to be publicly popular. Smaller nightclubs were found at the beaches and in the valley, and that’s where we played. However, we did learn more clearly the power of the demo packages we had been sending out. The industry wasn’t looking; they were listening. On one occasion at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard, a dozen listeners came off the street to hear our songs. The group stayed because they could sit with their drinks and talk. In smaller clubs, I sat alone, surrounded by dozens of empty tables and chairs before a few locals strolled in. A few times, it was just me and the bartender.

When God Calls You (1986)

Be a superstar, shooting fast and far, driving wherever it takes,

’Cause curves in the road lighten up your load as you learn from your mistakes.

It’s a one-way street with only one seat, dreams shine a light to see.

On a course straight to hell, there’s a higher parallel: When God Calls You, you’ll be free.

When God Calls You, you’ll be free.

Can you hear? Can you see? When God Calls You, you’ll be free. Can you hear? Can you see? When God Calls You, you’ll be free.

As You Allow   (2014)

Make us Lord, Your clay, shape us Lord, we bow, and need You Lord, always,

Lead us Lord, As You Allow, As You Allow, lead us Lord, As You Allow,

Souls gather in Your name, of all nations with one aim, to lift the cross, and proclaim

Jesus is Lord

Christian army, in Your grace, growing stronger in the race, bringing good news, face to face

Jesus is Lord

Make us Lord, Your clay, shape us Lord, we bow, and need You Lord, always,

Lead us Lord, As You Allow, As You Allow, lead us Lord, As You Allow,

Deuteronomy 33:27 “The eternal God is our refuge,”

John 4:24 “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
